Digital X-rays are a safe, non-invasive diagnostic tool that give our veterinarians a detailed look at your pet's bones, joints, chest, and abdomen. Because the images are available immediately, we can often diagnose problems and begin treatment more quickly.
When Are X-Rays Recommended?
Your veterinarian may recommend X-rays if your pet is experiencing:
- Limping or difficulty walking
- Suspected broken bones or other injuries
- Coughing or difficulty breathing
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
- Possible intestinal obstruction or foreign body ingestion
- Urinary issues, including suspected bladder stones
- Unexplained weight loss
- Arthritis or other joint problems
- Certain types of lumps or swelling
X-rays are also commonly used to monitor the progression of chronic conditions, evaluate healing after surgery or injury, and assist in planning surgical procedures.

In cases involving more complex conditions, we also have access to board-certified veterinary radiologists and specialists who can review your pet's images. How X-Rays are Taken on Pets
Taking X-rays requires your pet to remain in specific positions for brief periods so we can capture clear, diagnostic-quality images of the area being evaluated. Most pets tolerate this process very well, but we understand that some may find it stressful, uncomfortable, or painful depending on the reason for their visit.
Our team takes every step to keep your pet as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure. For some patients, mild to moderate sedation may be recommended to reduce anxiety, minimize discomfort, and allow us to safely obtain the high-quality images needed for an accurate diagnosis.
